Tour Overview

A Once-in-a-Lifetime River Experience

Montana 406 Outdoor Adventures works with clients year-round to help build custom trips, but each summer we also offer three to four Wild and Scenic Missouri River canoe trips. These three to five-day guided float trips are designed for travelers who want to experience Montana from the water, away from crowds, cell service, and everyday noise.

Expert river guides with extensive historical knowledge lead the way, guide you through the waters, set up camp each night, and cook incredible campfire meals for a true taste of Montana home cooking.

Having made the scenic 149-mile float on multiple occasions, we can say firsthand that this is a once-in-a-lifetime outdoor adventure.

About the Float

Float Through History on the Mighty Missouri

The Mighty Missouri is always flowing, slowly carving and shaping the land and the people who have called this area home. For Lewis and Clark historians, this route is especially meaningful. The eastward settling of the emerging nation made this river one of the most significant routes of expansion, and the Corps of Discovery marveled at “scenes of visionary enchantment” along the now-famous White Cliffs of the Missouri.

Steamboats loaded with fortune seekers, miners, and people “mining the miners” helped seal historic Fort Benton’s fate as the “world’s innermost port.” The Nez Perce also crossed this river in 1877 while fleeing the U.S. Army in exile to reservation lands. Cave paintings, tipi sites, wildlife, geology, and river history are only a few of the potential points of interest along the way.

This trip is for travelers who want to get out as the explorers did. There is no cell service, no internet, and few, if any, other campers. The historic route offers abundant wildlife sightings, historic points of interest, and opportunities to get off the river and explore.

Best Season

Trips run in different weather conditions, but summer is recommended for the best experience.

Remote Travel

This is a true remote river experience with no cell service, no internet, and very few other campers.
