Tour Overview

A Spring Migration Spectacle on Montana’s Prairie Wetlands

Every early spring, Freezeout Lake becomes a gathering place for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds and the visitors who come to witness them. Tundra swans, snow geese, and more than 200 other species use the lake and surrounding wetlands as a critical stopover during one of North America’s most impressive wildlife migrations.

Beginning in mid-March, birds arrive at Freezeout Lake to rest and wait for conditions farther north to open for feeding and breeding. Snow geese typically have only a short window here, often around two weeks, as they move north from the California coast toward Alberta, central Saskatchewan, and eventually the Arctic coast of Canada.

Freezeout Lake is Montana’s primary staging area for snow geese, with peak gatherings that can reach up to 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans. For birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, the sight of white-winged flocks rising, landing, and moving across the prairie sky is unforgettable.

Snow Goose Migration

Freezeout Lake hosts one of Montana’s most dramatic spring wildlife events, with waves of snow geese arriving after a nearly 1,000-mile journey from California.

Tundra Swans

Thousands of tundra swans use the lake as a staging area during migration, adding elegance and sound to the wetland landscape.

Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area

Managed for waterfowl, upland game birds, public hunting, and wildlife viewing, the WMA protects important habitat.
