Our most requested option. Yellowstone holds life nearly year-round, and while winter thins out the species easily seen, every season offers strong wildlife viewing. Warm-month trips center on the Lamar Valley in the park's north — among the densest wildlife country anywhere and the best place to observe Yellowstone's wolves. Extra days let us push further and deeper, including short walks into more remote ground.

Old Faithful is the headliner, but dozens of other geysers are scattered across the park, along with a remarkable collection of waterfalls. Reaching some of the best falls means hiking semi-rough terrain — well worth the effort for what waits at the end.

Winter delivers a far more intimate park. We recommend opening with a wildlife day to find wolves and get your bearings, then following it with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Traveling on foot across deep snow leads to vistas that stop you in your tracks.

Much of Yellowstone sees almost no human traffic. Backpacking puts you in country that fewer than one percent of visitors ever reach — waterfalls, thermal features, and wildlife far from any road or pullout.
