Tour Overview

A Western Art Landmark Honoring Montana’s Iconic Storyteller

The C.M. Russell Museum preserves the brilliance of Charles M. Russell, one of the most important artists of the American West. Through paintings, sculptures, drawings, and illustrated letters, Russell captured daily life on the range, the rugged world of the cowboy, the culture of the Plains Indian, and the sweeping wilderness landscapes of Montana.

Russell’s work reflects personal experience during the closing days of the western frontier. His deep admiration for Northern Plains Indian culture was shaped in part by the summer of 1888, when he lived near Blackfeet, Piegan, and Blood Indian camps in Alberta, Canada. Those observations influenced his art for the rest of his life, giving his depictions of people, wildlife, and western life a rare sense of immediacy and respect.

The museum’s five permanent galleries trace Russell’s artistic evolution from boyhood creations to masterworks in multiple media. Visitors can also explore his preserved blue frame home, his cedar log studio, authentic cowboy gear, Native American artifacts, illustrated letters, and exhibitions that examine the bison’s enduring importance to Northern Plains culture.
