Tour Overview

A Legendary Western Celebration Built on Bucking Horses and Cowboy Heritage

The World Famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is far more than a rodeo. Held annually on the third full weekend in May, this iconic Eastern Montana event showcases some of the finest bucking stock on the continent while celebrating the deep ranching and rodeo traditions of cowboy country.

Known as the Cowboy Mardi Gras, the Bucking Horse Sale has become the biggest event of the year in Miles City. Cowboys, cowgirls, ranchers, rodeo fans, and first-time visitors gather for four days of Western entertainment, including a Kick Off Concert, horse racing, bucking horse events, community festivities, and the kind of local character that turns a weekend into a story.

The event began in 1950 when Les Boe, owner of the local livestock yards, needed a creative way to sell 30 bucking horses acquired in a trade. By letting the horses buck and inviting cowboys to ride them, he created a spectacle that attracted buyers, ranchers, and rodeo fans. What started as a practical horse sale quickly grew into one of Montana’s most beloved Western traditions.
