Tour Overview

A Wild & Historic Landscape Along the Upper Missouri

The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument encompasses 375,000 acres of public land in central Montana. This rugged landscape protects a remarkable mix of wildlife habitat, geological formations, historic routes, cultural resources, and wide-open country shaped by the Upper Missouri River.

At the heart of the monument is the 149-mile stretch of the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River. The route begins near historic Fort Benton and travels downstream through remote river country toward the Fred Robinson Bridge, offering some of the most secluded and memorable scenery in Montana.

This is a place where history still feels close. The river corridor preserves views that once impressed the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805 and 1806, and it also holds connections to the route traveled by the Nez Perce in 1877.
