Hundreds of high-country lakes dot the mountains of southwest Montana, but reaching them often takes dedicated planning, route knowledge, and plenty of legwork. The reward is worth it: elbow room, clean air, incredible views, and spectacular fishing in secluded alpine settings.
These mountain fisheries can hold native cutthroat trout, rare golden trout, hard-fighting rainbows, and beautiful grayling. Whether you want a challenging hike-in lake, a multi-day alpine fishing trip, or a custom route built around your group’s ability, Montana’s high-country lakes offer a fly fishing experience unlike anything at roadside water.

What to Expect

High-country lake fishing is part angling adventure, part mountain travel. Some lakes require short hikes, while others involve steep trails, rugged terrain, backpacking, or multi-day travel. The access can be demanding, but the solitude and scenery are part of the magic.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks stocks many alpine lakes on rotating schedules, while some lakes support wild fish populations. The fishing season is short at these highland tarns. Lakes around 7,000 feet may be fishable from late May through October, while the highest lakes are often best from July through September.
Because conditions can change quickly in the mountains, planning matters. Snowpack, access, trail closures, storms, landowner restrictions, and elevation all play a role in choosing the right lake for your group.
