Tour Overview
A Scenic Mountain Byway Through History, Hot Springs, and High-Country Adventure
The Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway travels through the heart of the Pioneer Mountains in Beaverhead County, offering one of Southwest Montana’s most rewarding scenic drives. Established in 1989, the route begins near the small community of Wise River and follows the peaceful Wise River southward before climbing into a landscape of forests, meadows, streams, and mountain views.
As the byway continues, it crosses a 7,800-foot divide between Wise River and Grasshopper Creek, moving through terrain shaped by both natural forces and Montana’s mining past. Granite peaks rising above 10,000 feet dominate the eastern skyline, while gentler forests, lodgepole pine stands, willow bottoms, and mountain meadows create a varied and beautiful journey.
The Pioneer Mountains offer more than a scenic drive. Visitors can explore interpretive sites, hike backcountry trails, fish the nearby Big Hole River and high-elevation lakes, visit the ghost town of Coolidge, discover the abandoned Elkhorn silver mine, and relax at Elkhorn Hot Springs. In winter, the range becomes a snowy playground for cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, and snowmobiling.
