Tour Overview

Hiking Through Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks

Glacier National Park holds some of the most dramatic scenery in the country, from the engineering marvel of Going to the Sun Road to trails that wind past snowfields, turquoise lakes, and towering peaks. This six day tour crosses the border into Canada as well, adding Waterton Lakes National Park and its landmark Prince of Wales Hotel to the trip.

Wildlife sightings are part of the experience throughout, with bighorn sheep, mule deer, mountain goats, and the occasional bear all possible along the trails. Bring your passport. This is a trip that spans two countries and two exceptional parks in a single itinerary.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

Arrive in Big Sky Country and settle into a rustic Swiss style lodge near the park. Hike the Trail of the Cedars through old growth forest to Avalanche Lake, then cool off with a swim in Lake McDonald before taking in the Montana night sky.

  • Day 2-3

Travel Going to the Sun Road, considered one of the most scenic drives in the world, as it climbs over the Continental Divide. Hike the Highline Trail past geologic landmarks like Haystack Butte, and take in panoramic views from Logan Pass before crossing into Canada. Spend these nights at the historic Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton Lakes National Park, with free time to explore trails, kayak, browse Waterton Townsite, or relax with afternoon tea.

  • Day 4-5

Hike the Carthew Alderson Trail, widely regarded as one of the best hikes in Alberta, passing through multiple ecological zones with views of Forum Peak and Mount Custer. Return to Glacier National Park for a hike through Many Glacier Valley, past a lake cold enough to hold icebergs well into summer, with strong odds of spotting bighorn sheep, mule deer, and possibly a grizzly. The trip winds down with a quiet morning walk around Swiftcurrent Lake before traveling along the park's eastern edge to Whitefish, where the tour ends.
