Tour Overview
Hike to Montana’s Year-Round Ice Caves
Explore the enchanting beauty of Montana’s ice caves with a unique adventure into one of Big Sky Country’s most fascinating frozen landscapes. These tours are designed for travelers who want something different: rugged hiking, dramatic scenery, natural formations, and the strange beauty of ice preserved through the seasons.
The Ice Caves Trail climbs nearly five miles toward the permanent ice caves atop Snowy Crest. Along the way, hikers gain elevation, cross open ridge country, follow cairn-marked sections, and take in far-reaching views of surrounding mountain ranges.
At the cave, water trickles into a wide limestone formation and freezes into columns or coats the floor with slick ice. The result is a striking natural feature that feels hidden, remote, and unforgettable.

What to Expect

An ice cave tour is an active adventure that requires preparation and a good comfort level with mountain hiking. The Ice Caves Trail begins with a steady climb of about three miles to the summit of Snowy Crest, gaining roughly 2,200 feet in elevation. This portion is considered moderately difficult and rewards hikers with expanding views as they climb.
From the summit area, the route continues for about two miles along a flatter section of Snowy Crest on Trail 490. This stretch follows an open ridge marked by cairns, or small rock piles, before reaching the ice cave.
Inside the cave, the surface can be slick and icy. Water entering the cave freezes into columns or spreads across the floor, creating an ice-rink-like surface. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather, exposed ridge travel, and colder conditions near the cave.
