Tour Overview

A Bitterroot Valley Basecamp for History, Rivers, and Mountain Adventure

Hamilton sits in the heart of the picturesque Bitterroot Valley, serving as the primary trading center for the small farms, ranches, and orchards scattered throughout the surrounding countryside. As the county seat of Ravalli County, this lively yet welcoming town offers a clean downtown, local amenities, and a small-town atmosphere that feels both active and relaxed.

Hamilton’s history is closely tied to some of Montana’s most influential figures and preserved landmarks. The Daly Mansion, built in the late 1800s for Marcus Daly, one of Montana’s famed Copper Kings, offers a glimpse into the region’s Gilded Age past. Downtown, the Ravalli County Museum occupies the original 1900 Ravalli County Courthouse, a historic building saved from demolition and now listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Hamilton is an ideal starting point. The Bitterroot River flows through the community and is known for excellent trout fishing, while the Bitterroot Mountains rise to the west along the edge of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. To the east, the Sapphire Mountains offer hunting, backcountry exploration, and scenic drives, including the beautiful Skalkaho Highway Scenic Byway south of town.
