Tour Overview
A Look Inside Hutterite Community Life
The Hutterites are a communal people living on hundreds of scattered bruderhöfe, or colonies, throughout the prairies of northwestern North America. In a typical Hutterite colony, families live and work together while farming, raising livestock, producing goods, and supporting the daily needs of the community.
Montana 406 Outdoor Adventures works with a number of Hutterite colonies to offer respectful, hands-on experiences within living and working communities. These visits give guests the opportunity to step back in time and learn traditional skills in an authentic setting.
Depending on the colony, season, and available activities, guests may learn to make bread, prepare jam, milk a cow, see how farm life is organized, or even learn about wine making. Each visit is built around connection, respect, learning, and a rare glimpse into a way of life many travelers never get to experience.

Your visit may include time in kitchens, gardens, barns, workshops, or other community spaces, depending on what the colony is able to offer. Guests may learn practical skills, see how work is shared, and gain insight into a lifestyle centered on faith, family, cooperation, and self-sufficiency.
Because these are real communities with daily responsibilities, each visit depends on timing, availability, season, and the needs of the colony. Montana 406 Outdoor Adventures helps coordinate the experience so your group can enjoy a meaningful, respectful visit..
Respectful Visits
These experiences take place in living communities, so respect, patience, and appropriate behavior are important.
What to Wear
Comfortable, modest clothing and practical footwear are recommended for farm or kitchen-based activities.
